1968 Chevelle SS 396 was an all new body style compared to the 1967 Chevelle. The redesigned Chevelle ran as good as it looked in 1968 it had an L 78 engine option at the top of the line and offered 375 hp. This new 1968 Chevelle body had a wrap over front and to give it a distinctive character. It also had a long in front short in back styling that was all the rage in the era of the 1960s the use of the two wheelbase uses allowed the sportier look Chevelle coupes and convertibles. The 1968 Chevelle SS 396 high performance was a separate series in 1968. It included a sports coupe which was a base price of $2899 and a convertible priced at $3102. Both had the shorter wheelbase. Overall length at 197.1 inches it was just a tad longer than the 1967, even though the wheelbase was downsized by 3 inches. The front and the rear tread widths were also up an inch and 59 inches. The new Chevelle was also nearly an inch taller at 52.7 inches. The Chevelle SS 396 models were made even more distinctive by use of matte black finish around the full lower perimeter of the bodies, except when the cars were finished in a dark color. The other SS features included F 70 x 14 wide oval red stripes tires, by accent stripes, a special twin – domed hood with simulated air intakes and that SS badges, vinyl upholstery and a heavy duty three speed transmission with four mounted shifter.
