In 1974 the true
muscle car air was coming to an end. The
builders of the Camaro and Mustang and all
of the supercharged muscle cars had to deal with government
regulations and higher fuel costs. The Mustang II was drastically
unusual from what for introduced in April of 1964. There were shrinkage of
the wheelbase from 109 inches to 96.2 inches. The 1974 Mustang was
almost going to be released in one body style. But their market testing
changes their mind. Ford Mustang buyers wanted both a notch back and
a fastback. Self forward came out with four separate models from two basic
designs there was the hard top, a model called 2+2, the
Mustang Mach 1 and the Ghia, it
was the name of Ford's Italian design studio that took the place of the 1969
through 1973 Grande as a luxury notch back Mustang. The 1974 Mustang came
out of the 2.3 L four-cylinder the vin code was Y. It was the first in a
long line of Ford Mustang engines. First year to come out with the
overhead camshaft and it was the least powerful engine in the Mustang
history it only produced 83 to 92 hp during the run in the Mustang II
series. The four-cylinder was standard in the hard top, Ghia and the
Mustang 2+2
