Toyota Matrix is a trendy small farm cart, available with either front- or all-wheel drive, part on the Corolla. The 1.8-liter Four stridently and performs self-effacingly. XRS models use a more influential engine and come only with a six-speed manual and front-wheel-drive. Behavior is fairly nimble, and the ride is obedient if a little edgy. Access is very easy, and the rear seat is quite roomy. The optional AWD system (available only with the automatic transmission) works well but hurts acceleration and fuel economy. Folding the rear seats creates a large, flat load floor. On the whole, the Toyota Matrix is a reasonable alternative to a small SUV. Solidity control was available for 2005.
